It is hard to believe that another year is over and that this is the last Newsletter for 2023.

Theologian, Karl Rahner SJ, once said, isn’t Christmas a time when God gives us permission to be a happy? So why not? Christmas is also a time when we are reminded that there was no room for him at the Inn. Peoples’ busy lives and expectations kept them from offering him a place to be born. That hasn’t changed.

Abbott, Ron Rolheiser OMI explains it is complex. In the days leading up to Christmas, many of us struggle to do all the things we need to do to be ready for all that needs to happen at home and work. We need to shop for gifts, send out cards, put up lights and decorations, plan menus, buy food, attend a goodly number of Christmas socials. This, added to the normal day-to-day pressures in our lives, not infrequently leaves us with the feeling: I’m not going to make it! I won’t be ready for Christmas! This rarely changes from year to year.

Rolheiser says being ready for Christmas ought not depend upon getting everything neatly checked off on our to-do list: gifts, done; cards, done; decorations, done; food, ready; the requisite number of social obligations, completed. If you find yourself greeting your family, friends and neighbours with a little more warmth, compassion and understanding then you have made room in the Inn, you have taken on the message and purpose of Christ this Christmas. This we can change.

I would like to conclude the last Newsletter for the year by recognising the incredible talent and achievement of our students both in the more recognisable fields of academics, music, dance, drama, and sports, but also in the fields of speech and debating, service and mission, velour, and virtue.

In recognising these fine achievements of our students, I am particularly conscious of, and give recognition to, the dedication of all staff and their hard work and commitment to their students. I would like to thank the College Senior Leadership Team, Mr Bob Munday (DP), Ms Deborah Gillis (AP Pastoral Care), Mr Gavin Russell (AP Curriculum), and Mrs Elke Forrest (Business Manager); the Academic and Pastoral Heads, Deans, Coordinators and teachers. I acknowledge especially too the leadership of Mr Chris Goodman, Director of Mission, who continues to inspire and grow the College’s awareness and response to our call to service – an act of hope. I acknowledge Mr Andrew Wisemantel our Head of Sport who left a legacy in his sudden and sad passing, of a culture and ethos of participation, sportsmanship, the attainment of excellence, and above all, enjoyment in sport at Oakhill College. I acknowledge the hard work of our IT staff, Administration staff and our Maintenance staff who work tirelessly to ensure the College is maintained and functions smoothly and efficiently. I would also like to thank Mr John Puleo, Chairperson, and the Board for their support and guidance of the College.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all volunteers including the Canteen and Uniform Shop volunteers; the Parents and Friends Committee; Rugby and Basketball Clubs; those who attend drop-off and pick up for sports practice, drama, music, debating and the Show Team. This list goes on – to all, thank you.

To all students of 2023, thank you for your hard work, mental toughness, discipline, and determination to succeed at whatever the task, whatever the pain, and to accept both success and failure that are always part of one’s journey. This year is a chronicle, a testament to both your attitude and your achievements as men and women of justice, tenderness, and humility, striving for excellence in all you do, being the best self that you can be. Make room for Jesus in the Inn this summer - be good, be kind, be compassionate in all you do, think, and say.

Like all creatures, you’re dependent and inter-dependent. Life works when you acknowledge this, when you accept that you can’t give yourself life. All is gift. If you try to live the illusion of self-sufficiency and try to guarantee you own immortality, you mimic the sin of Adam and Eve, complete with all the futility of effort, the lording-it-over, and the alienation from nature that ensures. Proper living begins with the words:  I am not God!

Each year Oakhill College joins St Lucy's in a day of Christmas festivities. Unfortunately this year St Lucy's visit to Oakhill had to be cancelled, however, on Thursday 30th November, some of our Year 10 students visited St Lucy's to spread some Christmas cheer and join in the celebrations with the students.

On November 24th, Marko, Jayden and I, along with Ms Leopardi had the privilege of attending the ‘Hills Say No to Domestic Violence’ meeting at Castle Hill RSL. This event provided us with a profound understanding of the distressing firsthand ordeals ensured by female survivors of domestic violence in our local communities. Moved by the poignant stories of these victimised women, we recognised the urgent need for change, especially within our generation, tasked with shaping the future. 

Representing Year 10, we were honoured to deliver a speech, showcasing our contributions to the Walk the Talk Program, which included our fundraising efforts for The Sanctuary, our local women’s shelter. Shockingly, police reports revealed a disturbing escalation in domestic violence cases, manifesting in increasingly brutal and detrimental impacts on women’s physical and mental health. Tragically, we learned of instances where women fell victim to murder, their vulnerability laid bare in all circumstances. One particularly heart-wrenching case involved the recent death of an 11-month-old baby, a stark reminder of the harm of domestic violence. Ultimately, this experience, though confronting and challenging, deepened our understanding of the severity of domestic violence in Australia, motivating us to actively contribute to a future free from such atrocities.

Christian Attard, Year 10

Students of Year 10, 2023 have participated in a transformative volunteer program that has not only enriched the lives of its participants but has also made a significant impact on Oakhill College and the wider community. One of the highlights of "Walk the Talk" has been its fundraising efforts for a local women's shelter - The Sanctuary. The funds raised by dedicated volunteers have not only provided tangible support to those in need but have also strengthened the ties between our College and the wider community. This includes collecting donations and running the City to Surf on behalf of the shelter, selling lolly bags at Gala Day's, facilitating BBQ's, selling cupcakes at Mission Action Day and hopefully other many initiatives in the future. By actively contributing to the welfare of others, the students have exemplified the values of empathy, compassion, and community engagement. We are proud to announce that the students have raised over $3,000 and purchased THREE iPads for The Sanctuary for Christmas.

The impact of this program extends far beyond the College gates. The ripple effect of our collective efforts has created a safer and more supportive environment for survivors of domestic violence, fostering a sense of hope and resilience. It is heartening to see our College community come together to address a pressing societal issue, demonstrating that positive change is possible when we unite for a common cause.

Let us continue to 'walk the talk' and be the change we ALL wish to see in the world.

Dear Roxanne and Oakhill community, thank you for this incredible update. For those of you who may not have met me before, I’m an ex-Oakhill parent and the founder of the Walk The Talk education program for Women’s Community Shelters. When I first joined the Board of The Sanctuary as a Foundation Board Member, I immediately wanted to include the students at Oakhill. I knew firsthand that there was a strong culture of support at the College for social justice, and I believed that young men would want to feel they were part of a solution to the terrible and ongoing wickedness that domestic violence causes, not only to women and children, but to their extended circle of loved ones who often feel powerless to help. I remain very proud of the work your College does in particular, and thank Ms Roxanne Leopardi wholeheartedly for her incredible advocacy and commitment. As we read the papers this year, it feels that every week there is yet another report about a woman who has lost her life at the hands of a man who once professed to love her. It is these little stories of youth action that provide a glimmer of hope to all of us here on the front line working in the domestic violence sector.

Friday 1st December marked a momentous occasion as we gathered for the Annual Year 10 Awards Presentation. Amidst the proud parents, dedicated staff, and eager students, we acknowledged the efforts of every student who gave their best, whether or not they received formal recognition. The ceremony celebrated not just academic excellence but also the extensive involvement of students in co-curricular activities. It was a testament to the tireless dedication and hard work of our teaching and support staff, whose commitment forms the backbone of our educational journey. Furthermore, we expressed heartfelt thanks for the loyal support and generous involvement of parents, alumni, and other valued members of our extended College community. Today's ceremony was a poignant reminder of the collective strength that propels us forward as a united and thriving educational family.

Walk the Talk Awards

The Ceremony also included Christian Attard, Aimon Fitzsimmons and Flynn Farrell who spoke on behalf of the cohort about their goals, experiences and achievements over the past four years. They thanked Mr Fisher who has been their Dean for the duration of their time at Oakhill and also thanked Ms Robertson, Mr Rajcyzk and their Tutor Teachers who have been integral to their growth and development over the past four years as well. Mr Fisher then replied with a compelling address about the Year 10 cohort, and how they have grown into fine young men.

We also farewelled Logan Emmas, Parker Galvin, Ryan Martens, Harry Piper and Fynn Vander Stock who graduated from Oakhill College to enter the workforce.

Last week, Years 9 and 10 were visited by four aspirational role models, Stephen Crichton (Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs 2024, previously Penrith Panthers), Spencer Leniu (Roosters 2024, previously Penrith Panthers), Sunia Turuva (Penrith Panthers) and Aaron Cairns (DJ Discretion). The topic of the day was ‘Building Character’. Sharing their personal experiences, these men talked about resilience, perseverance, setting goals, overcoming obstacles and having the courage to do the hard right thing, over the easy wrong thing.

Our Year 9 boys, along with five girls from PLC, emerged victorious at the 3rd Kids v Cops Oztag Tournament organised by Kuring Gai Police Area Command and the NRL. With a series of impressive wins, including a thrilling overtime victory in the Grand Final against Barker College, they showcased excellent sportsmanship and were fabulous representatives at this fun, well organised community event.

On Thursday 30th November, the Year 9 Elective Italian class took part in an Italian Cooking Incursion. Students were able to make their own pizza and enjoy eating it. This type of Incursion allows students to immerse themselves into Italian culture whilst learning new skills at the same time. A huge thank you to the Hospitality team who hosted us in the Oakhill kitchen - a big shout out in particular to Mrs McKay for giving up her time to help us.

On Tuesday and Wednesday this week, our Year 9 Drama class went on a hilarious journey back to the 1980’s with their totally radical adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “ The Comedy of Errors”.

Set in the lively halls of Ephesus High at a time of big hair, bold fashion an even bolder personalities, the students wholeheartedly embraced the challenge of merging classical literature with the spirit of the 80’s and we are so proud with the way their commitment and enthusiasm truly ignited the stage.

For many of these young performers, this marks their debut on the Oakhill stage and their dedication has been nothing short if inspiring. First performances are equal parts exciting and terrifying, but they stay with you forever.

Year 9 Visual Arts created street art inspired artworks to highlight environmental issues that they care about. Cohen Orsini created a fantastic representation of a whale full of the rubbish and plastics our society throws away only to end up in our waterways. Well done Cohen on creating a fantastic artwork highlighting a really important issue in our society, you are our November Artist of the Month!

This semester students in years 7-10 entered the NCSS Challenge, a programming competition open to all school students. More than 300 students from Oakhill College entered the competition this year.

Programming (also known as coding) is how sites like Facebook and apps like Instagram are made. Knowing how to program is like having a computing super power.

Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates have all said that students should learn how to code. It’s a skill that not only teaches you how to work with computers, but also teaches you how to think about solving problems with systems.

The NCSS Challenge teaches students to code in Python 3.6. Python is an easy to learn scripting language used for many different purposes such as web applications and scientific research. Companies like Google, Facebook and Reddit all use Python in their infrastructure and web services.

Oakhill Booklists 2024

Year 8 have finished the school year by investigating characteristics of Contemporary Art Practice. Here students mirror conventions by utilising technology within their material practice. All classes have been inspired by a variety of artists. These students became part of Peter Drew’s practice. He engaged with schools to continue his iconic Aussie Series which began in Broken Hill in 2016.

Inspired by the practice of Contemporary Artist Peter Drew, we created artworks for the artist that celebrate our cultural heritage. Here I could celebrate my Indonesian background. In Sumatra, everyone wears sunglasses because it is such a sunny place. By wearing these sunglasses, I acknowledge my cultural heritage and also my Australian identity as an Aussie.

Year 8 has utilised Andy Warhol as an influencing artist in our Peter Drew works (our AUSSIE posters) by incorporating Warhol’s screen-printing strategy of multiple layers of bright colours. We have also used a “stamp” filter in Adobe Photoshop, where the images we have taken of ourselves allow for a deep contrast to the bright colours and highlighting the facial features of ourselves, relating back to the main concept of the Peter Drew artwork by acknowledging an archival portrait of Monga Khan as an Aussie.

On Tuesday 14th November, Year 9 students were lucky enough to embark on a great challenge of Oakhill Camp at Somerset. This trip was filled with adventure, companionship, and personal growth, this camp was more than just a trip it was a transformative experience that left an indelible mark on our students. Stay tuned as we dive into the highlights of their journey and the life lessons they brought back with them. We were tasked at the beginning of Camp by Ms Robertson to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. At first, we had no idea why Miss had tasked us with this, but as Camp went on our understanding grew and we had cracked this concept.

This was conveyed through the many activities such as canoeing which caused a lot of infighting between mates about who was doing all the paddling. Or when it came to hiking and the constant question of ‘Are we there yet’? We learnt many essential life skills such as how to start a fire, set up a tent and cook our own food. Many of us conquered our fears of heights through abseiling and crate staking which was a favourite for Ms Robertson. After every night students would sit around the campfire and would laugh and talk about that day's events. Waking up every day with minimal sleep was tough at first. Still, it became bearable and paled in comparison where students who had not set up their tents properly had to endure rain and water interrupting their sleep and flooding their tents. Many woke up the next morning wet and tired but powered through as it was the last day and were heading home.

Year 9 Camp was not just an excursion, but a journey of self-discovery, camaraderie, and adventure. It was a time when we stepped out of our comfort zones and achieved Miss' goal of being comfortable with being uncomfortable. Furthermore we embraced and faced the wilderness, and created memories that will last a lifetime.

Australia Reads has recently completed a Research Review on reading research conducted in Australia and overseas.

Top 5 Findings

1. Children who were exposed to more storybooks showed a greater inclination to read for pleasure and in turn, had more advanced literacy skills as adolescents.
2. 89% of children (age 6-17) agree their favourite books are the ones that they have picked out themselves.
3. Reading is four times more influential on intellectual progress in teens than having a parent with a degree.
4. Exposure to larger home libraries in adolescence has a positive direct effect on adult literacy, numeracy, and information and communications technology skills
5. 37% of Australians said they do not read because it is difficult to find the time.

This summer I encourage you to buy (or borrow) lots of books, let your sons and daughters choose which ones they want to read and make sure to give them time to sit back and enjoy a great bookAs adults finding time in our busy schedules is often a barrier to enjoying many things. This summer try and give yourself permission to spend an afternoon or two with a good book of your choice.

The PJ Walsh Library is looking forward to continuing to encourage a love of reading in students next year.

The anticipation is mounting as our Show Team are getting ready for the 2024 Royal Easter Show. Our team is now complete with 10 steers being presented for competition next year. What sets this year's team apart is not just their numbers but the creative touch in naming each member after delights found in a Favourites box of chocolates.

   The range of steers will be showcased in the Pure Bred Steer Competition and Trade Steer Competition. Each steer brings its unique blend of qualities and charm to the arena, and promises a vibrant showcase of breeds and personalities.

As the Royal Easter Show approaches early next year, we are hoping everyone will 'pick a favourite!'

The 2023 Sport season has concluded, marked by exceptional performances both on and off the field. This year has been witness to outstanding achievements, and as we reflect on the season, I encourage all students to set high standards for 2024. Utilise the Christmas holiday period to diligently work towards these goals. As we slowly adapt to a new normal following the tragic passing of College Head of Sport Mr Wisemantel, the Oakhill community has united to ensure his legacy endures.

Captains - Sport Report

Round 7 of the ISA Basketball took place over the weekend against the formidable opponent, St Augustine's. With the holiday break approaching, this game held particular significance for many divisions as teams vied for the top spot on the ladder.

Numerous close results were recorded, notably the Under 13 A’s side narrowly defeating Auggies in a last-minute thriller at Narrabeen, with a score of 32-33 to Oakhill. The 14 White side exhibited an impressive performance, dominating Redlands C’s with a final score of 45-11. Additionally, 14 Gold showcased exceptional teamwork, securing a victory against Redlands B’s with a score of 57-38. These wins contribute to the confidence of both teams as they head into the Christmas break.

La Salle House captain Isaac Beacroft, recently competed at the NSW 10,000m race walk championships placing 1st. He also broke the U18 Australian record with a time of 41:48 for the 10km. This time is also a world U20 championships qualifier and ranks him number 1 in the world for U18s. He will also be competing on Friday 8th December in Perth for the Australian all schools athletics championships. Best of luck Isaac!

Flynn Farrell (Year 10) has signed a 3-year contract with the NSW Waratahs. As one of the few 15-year-olds offered a deal to play with the Waratahs, Flynn's achievements on and off the field make us at Oakhill exceptionally proud. We eagerly anticipate supporting Flynn on his journey with the Waratahs and Rugby Australia.

Congratulations to Saverio Fedele who represented Oakhill and was the Consolation Winner: Year 10 Boys Singles in the 2023 Schoolboys Centenary Tennis Tournament.

Girls Rugby 7s

Congratulations to the Girls Rugby 7s for reaching the final of the Term 4 Summer Series. Although they narrowly lost to Barker in the final, their valiant effort is commendable. All the girls should take pride in their performance, as the Oakhill community certainly does. Well done, girls!

Congratulations to Joshua Strefner, who has been selected for the ISA Opens Cricket team. This is a remarkable achievement for a fine young man. Josh, the current 1st XI Cricket Captain, has exemplified leadership to his team. We wish Joshua the best of luck at the NSW CIS Cricket selection trials that occurred on Wednesday. A special mention to Ashane Jayapragash, selected as a shadow player in the ISA 1st XI team.

There are several items at the Uniform Shop that have been ordered and not yet picked up. The Uniform Shop reminds all families who have purchased items to please collect them before the end of the academic year on Thursday 7th December.

The College Uniform Shop will be open as per the hours below in the De La Salle Building. You may also order any uniform requirements via Flexischools. Flexischools will re-open to receive orders from Monday 22nd January. Once orders are completed, order pick ups are from The Uniform Shop during opening hours.

Marcus Campagna (Year 12) has been responsible for co-ordinating multiple donation drives for Ward Angels at the College with his mum Julie. This week he has put together large amounts of donations for every Ward Angels wish list and the kids in hospital couldn't be happier. Boxes of handmade jars filled with festive lollies were included in these gifts, which are always a favourite. Well done Marcus.
