From Br Steve Hogan fsc
International Women’s Day was Tuesday 8th March. Governed by a values-based education, it is our intent to form young men and women confident and articulate but also aware of their responsibility to include and respect each other in all we think, do and say.
On Friday 18th March, the College hosted a 'Show Your Colours' day to focus on the flood victims of NSW and Queensland and the Ukrainian refugees. Funds raised will support the Red Cross Flood Appeal, and the Lasallian ‘LaSalle for Ukraine’ Appeal to help fund programs for Ukrainian refugee children in Lasallian schools in Poland, Austria, Serbia, Hungary and Romania. The Superior General of the De La Salle Brother’s in Rome quoted Pope Francis’s words as war wreaks havoc in Ukraine:
'Lent is a favourable time to seek out – and not to avoid – those in need; to reach out – and not to ignore – those who need a sympathetic ear and a good word; to visit – and not to abandon – those who are lonely. Let us put into practice our call to do good to all, and take time to love the poor and needy, those abandoned and rejected, those discriminated against and marginalized.'
Congratulations to all students involved in the rich co-curricular life of the College this term. Congratulations to our Swimming Team and our Basketball Teams for winning the ISA Swimming Championship and the ISA Basketball School Champion for 2022.
On this note, Winston Churchill says: 'Success is not final; failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.'
With only three weeks of this term remaining, I would like to thank parents who have been busy helping their sons and daughters with their transition to Oakhill College, their learning, and the many events they are involved in and are reported on here in this Newsletter. Research indicates if you are connected to your adolescent’s school life then these students perform better.
This stage of a busy term can take its toll on patience, wellbeing, and resilience and requires some grit. We have been working with the staff and students this past week on wellbeing, resilience, and grit. One thing that helps is to slow down, even for just a moment quiet, to gain a sense of calm; a sense of mindfulness; a sense of God’s presence. I encourage all parents, even though it is so busy, to take a moment when most anxious to have a cup of tea or sit on the porch or listen to soothing music, to take a breath and take comfort in these words.
I arise today through
God's strength to pilot me, God's might to uphold me,
God's wisdom to guide me, God's eye to see before me,
God's ear to hear me, God's word to speak for me,
God's hand to guard me, God's way to lie before me,
God's shield to protect me, God's host to secure me –
Christ, be with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ where I lie, Christ where I sit,
Christ where I arise, Christ in the heart of those who think of me,
Christ in the mouth of those who speak of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in every ear that hears me.
I arise today.
