Greetings,
We all need to be people of hope, for it is hope that drives us to do good and be better people. At Oakhill College we teach empathy, compassion, respect and understanding through our five key principles: respect for all persons; inclusivity; faith in God’s presence; quality education; and social justice; and also, through our relationships with each other and through service. The Prophet Micah says, “All God asks of you is to act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:4).
Congratulations to all students involved in the rich co-curricular life of the College this term. With hopeful anticipation I wish our students every success, and if not, to feel fulfilled, for having given one’s best as we attend a number of interschool finals this week. The College has 22 Basketball teams, four Touch Football teams, and 1st XI Cricket competing in the ISA Summer Sports Finals. Thanish Gnaneshwara will be competing in the CSDA Public Speaking Final. In the ISA Swimming Carnival Oakhill College will be hoping to retain the Overall Champions Shield. Next week, the College will participate in the Castle Hill Show with many students hoping to qualify as paraders and judges for the Royal Easter Show. And let us not forget our Year 12 students who are sitting their mid-year exams, hopeful of bettering their grades and attaining equally if not better results than the 2024 Year 12 cohort.
On this note Winston Churchill says: “Success is not final; failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts. Never, never, ever, give up”.
Monday 17th March is the Feast of St Patrick, who brought Christianity to Ireland. St Patrick preached the Gospel message of HOPE to the many tribes and Kingdoms of Ireland who in turn took that message of hope to the Isles of Iona and Lindisfarne and from there to Europe.
To conclude, I wish to share with you the prayer, St Patrick’s Breastplate, written by St Patrick in 433AD, and hope that it brings you the same comfort and strength, and hopefulness, as it does for me.
Take a breath, take time, and take comfort in these words.
I arise today through
God's strength to pilot me, God's might to uphold me,
God's wisdom to guide me, God's eye to see before me,
God's ear to hear me, God's word to speak for me,
God's hand to guard me, God's way to lie before me,
God's shield to protect me,
God's host to secure me.
Christ, be with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ where I lie, Christ where I sit,
Christ where I arise, Christ in the heart of those who think of me,
Christ in the mouth of those who speak of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.
I arise today.
