Each year Oakhill participates in the inter-school competition Write a Book in a Day administered by The Kids' Cancer Project. This competition not only promotes literacy but also allows students to develop important skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, creativity and leadership while raising money to fund vital medical research to help children with cancer.
Pupils are given a brief and within 9 hours have to write, illustrate, and submit a storybook targeted to a youth audience. Additionally, this initiative includes the two-pronged philanthropic aspect of the competition that also builds empathy skills. Completed stories are provided in an online library to kids in hospital, while students seek sponsorship for their efforts.
Oakhill College students have raised in excess of $2,500, and Ryan Day from Year 8 has raised $2,100.00 - the second highest donation amount. Donations can be made via: https://writeabookinaday.com/sponsor-a-student/
