Well known for its all-round excellence, Oakhill College once again excels academically, achieving excellent results in the 2020 HSC.
At the start of 2020, Br Steve asked all Oakhill College students and staff to 'Act Justly' to dream big, to set goals, and work hard to achieve their personal best. If ever there was a year to demonstrate resilience in the face of adversity, 2020 was the year. This cohort has demonstrated true GRIT – having courage and resolve, and a strength of character, and persistence for challenges, and what a year of challenges this cohort has faced.
The success of the 2020 cohort can be attributed to a personal story of commitment and dedication from each and every student at the College. As a school community, we are extremely proud of each student’s achievement.
The Oakhill Graduate is a well rounded, resilient, grounded person who excels across multiple domains and subjects at the College, and we are proud of our results and our reputation.
Edward Joseph will be awarded College Dux for achieving the highest ATAR score for Oakhill College of 99.55. Our high ATAR achievers also include: Holly McDonell – 99.0, Adam McGill – 98.80, Joshua Ramos - 98.65, Olivia Pratt - 98.25, Broden Suffern – 98.1 and Tiarne Tighe - 98.1. They along with 44 other students will be awarded High Achievers at a ceremony at the College in February 2021.
Five Oakhill College students received ‘All-Rounder Awards’ in the 2020 HSC receiving a Band 6 in all subjects: Nathaniel Deitch, Edward Joseph, Olivia Pratt, Joshua Ramos and Tiarne Tighe; 54% of all grades were Band 5 or 6 compared with the State rate of 40%; and the number of students achieving Band 1 or 2 was only 2.9% compared to the State rate of 10.9%; 80% (40 out of the 50 courses offered) had means above the State average.
Congratulations to Grant Brennan who received a 5th in the State for Entertainment Industry VET Course - a tremendous achievement.
Our Extension and Accelerated courses also allow our students to achieve excellent marks. The 2020 HSC cohort had 23 students sit Mathematics Advanced and Extension 1 courses early, before the rest of the cohort, and of that nine students received E4 equivalent Band 6, fourteen E3 which is equivalent to a Band 5. All our extension students received Band 5 or 6. Our Studies of Religion 2 unit Accelerated course had 14 students sit this exam ahead of their cohort and achieve two Band 6s and twelve Band 5 results.
Two-thirds of the Class of 2020 also received early entry offers to university, which often translates to students feeling a sense of security and therefore taking their foot off the accelerator as they have secured a future placement, however, this cohort has continued to persist and showed true GRIT.
In addition, our practical and major works subjects and have also been acknowledged through a large number of nominations. Special mention to our VET Teachers who continually maintain a strong academic record, offering the Oakhill Graduate the opportunity to excel across multiple arenas, allowing them the opportunity to complete their HSC certificate and a dual accreditation in their courses.
The College had three Onstage nominations for Drama – Chris Cignarella, Juliette Piali and Tanner Woodhead. One nomination for Callback – Patrick Dixon for his core or major study performances in Dance.
In Music, James Royle and Elliott Carter received nominations for ENCORE for their overall performance/composition.
The following Industrial Technology students have been nominated for possible inclusion in InTech. InTech is an exhibition of outstanding Major Projects from HSC Industrial Technology students – John Harvey, Jamie Luck, Troyce Quimpo and Charlie Zeaiter.
Oakhill College provides students with a breadth of opportunities to demonstrate their abilities, both academically, as well as in terms of external achievement and service, making them a highly sort after graduate.
